Yes, you can put an AirTag in your wallet, and it will work. The tracker does not need line of sight, and leather does nothing to its signal. The real questions are practical ones: where it physically goes, how much bulk it adds, and whether the lining of your wallet gets in the way. This is what we have learned from making wallets and AirTag holders side by side.
Will an AirTag fit in a wallet?
An AirTag is a disc 31.9 mm across and 8 mm thick. That is thinner than a stack of five cards but it is round, so it does not slide into a card slot the way a card does. There are three places it can go:
- The note compartment. The easiest spot in a bifold. It works, but the AirTag rolls to the fold and creates a hard lump right where the wallet bends.
- A coin pocket. If your wallet has one, this is the best loose option — the pocket holds the disc in one place.
- A dedicated slot. Some wallets and travel holders have a round compartment cut for the AirTag. This keeps it flat and stops it wearing a ring into the leather.
What does not work well is forcing it into a card slot. The slot stretches around the disc and does not recover, so the cards that go back in later are loose.
How much bulk does it add?
Eight millimetres sounds small until you add it to a wallet that is already 12 to 15 mm thick when loaded. In a back pocket you will feel it when you sit. In a front pocket or a jacket it is barely noticeable.
If thickness matters to you, the honest answer is that a slim card holder and an AirTag in the same wallet is a compromise. A tracker on your keys, and your keys and wallet usually travel together, is often the better setup.
Does an RFID-blocking wallet block an AirTag?
Mostly no, with one exception worth knowing about.
RFID-blocking linings are designed for 13.56 MHz, the frequency contactless bank cards use. An AirTag finds its way home over Bluetooth at 2.4 GHz, and uses ultra-wideband for Precision Finding. A lining built for card skimming is not designed to stop those, and in normal use an AirTag inside an RFID wallet is still picked up by nearby Apple devices.
Two caveats. First, any metal-mesh layer can reduce Bluetooth range a little, so if you want to be sure, put the AirTag in the wallet, close it, and check that Find My still updates. Second, the AirTag also has NFC — the feature that lets a stranger tap it with a phone to see your contact details in Lost Mode. NFC runs at the same 13.56 MHz the lining is built to block, so a finder may need to take the AirTag out of the wallet before tapping it.

Will the AirTag scratch or mark the leather?
A loose AirTag has a polished steel back and a hard edge. Carried in the same compartment for months, it wears a visible circle into the lining and can burnish a ring on the outside of the leather where it presses. On full-grain leather that ring becomes part of the patina; on coated leather it can crack the finish.
A snug leather sleeve around the AirTag stops both. It is the same reason a keyring holder is cut close to the disc rather than loose.
Wallet, keys or bag: where an AirTag works best
- Keys. The most common choice. Keys get lost more often than wallets, and a leather AirTag keychain holder adds no bulk to your pocket.
- Wallet. Worth it if your wallet leaves the house without your keys — a front-pocket carry, a jacket you take off, a bag you set down.
- Passport holder. The strongest case for a tracker. A passport is the one thing that is expensive and slow to replace abroad. A passport holder with an AirTag slot keeps it tracked without a loose disc among your documents.
A note on anti-stalking alerts
Apple devices warn people when an unknown AirTag appears to be travelling with them. This is aimed at AirTags that are separated from their owner. When the AirTag is yours and your iPhone is with you, it does not trigger. If you share a wallet or bag with a partner who uses a different Apple ID, they may eventually see the alert — you can add them through Find My item sharing.
