Full-grain cowhide

Cut from the top layer of the hide with the natural grain left on, so no two pieces are quite the same shade. It starts slightly stiff and softens with handling, darkening where your hands touch it most.

Stamped, not printed

The verse is hot-stamped with a heated metal die, so the letters are pressed down into the grain rather than sitting on top of it. Printed lettering flakes off as leather flexes; a debossed line wears in with the rest of the piece and stays readable as the patina deepens.
